About 21st Coventry

Our Scout Group has been at the heart of the community for over 50 years and has served successive generations of families in Eastern Green, Coventry. We have taken pride in supporting young people in our community to learn the skills, and develop the confidence, to succeed in whatever they do in the future.

Our History

The Scout Hut off Kenthurst Close was originally a builders yard for the new housing estate of Eastern Green. In 1963 the 21st Eastern Green Scout Group was formed, but it wasn’t until 1972 that the scout hut was constructed and become the group headquarters.

In the last 56 years, the group has provided Scouting to many of the young people of Eastern Green, Mount Nod, Parkhill and more recently Banner Brook estates.

The story of our badge

This is our Group badge, the only one of its kind, created just for the 21st Coventry Scout Group.

The badge is based upon a design by Kevin Reilly who was a Scout and Scouter within the group. The badge was designed as part of a competition , on the occasion of the groups 21st Birthday , prior to this, other than the group name tape, no individual insignia was wore on our uniform.

The designed is formed from a number of symbols, an explanation of which can be seen below:

The Key

Represents the 21st (key to the door), the key to adventure & representative of the 21st Birthday of the group, when the badge was first granted by the Scout Association.

The Fleur de Lis

This is the scout symbol used throughout the world, first introduced by Baden Powell in 1907.

St. Andrew’s Cross

For Upper Eastern Green, and the Parish Church located at the end of Church Lane and consecrated on 4th November 1875.

The Compass

Represents the wide outlook of scouting with an enlarged “E” for Eastern Green. The name Eastern Green comes from the Green East of the Wood , the wood being the ancient forest of Arden.

The Unicorn

For Lower Eastern Green, for many years this consisted of only a small hamlet around Unicorn Lane.

The Three Spires over water

The link with the City of Coventry, the three spires of Coventry and the river Sherbourne.

The Exec

The group is run by an Executive committee made up of parents of current and former members, as well as the scout leaders. As an exec, our aims is primarily to keep the Scout Group going. However, there are several projects which we are hoping to complete in the future such as:

  • Buying New Equipment
  • Maintenance of the hut
  • Building our new HQ

We hope to raise money for these aims from grants and fund-raising. We raise a large amount of our money from our June Summer Fete (on the Green) and our spectacular bonfire and fireworks night (on the Rec).

We meet every couple of months and would welcome any input into these aims if you are interested in helping and supporting the group.

Get in touch. Get involved.

Whether you are a parent seeking information about how your child can join our scout group, an individual willing to volunteer their time or an organisation wanting to support our 21/21 project, then we would love to hear from you.
